Lightfair
International Sets New Benchmarks
Three themes dominated LFI 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention
Center during May 26-30 Environment: energy cost trimming,
utility demand reduction needs, and minimising hazardous substances
in products; Quality of life: design and aesthetics, daylighting,
versatile lighting control, human health, and security; Legislation:
efficiency standards and disposal.
USAs Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007
created higher lamp efficiency standards for the 40W to 100W
incandescent and halogen general service lamps. Starting January,
2012, 100W lamps will have to become 30% more efficient, and
by 2013-14, 40W, 60W and 75W lamps must follow the same efficiency
route.
A number of reduced-profile compact fluorescent lamps (CFL)
were seen at the show. And contrary to reports of their impending
demise, incandescent technology will still remain a choice.
For example, the new Nano Film Capsule technology, when applied
to a hybrid incandescent lamp, claims to have twice the efficiency
of a standard incandescent.
The benefits of durability and maintainability of LED light
sources were seen in a great majority of booths displaying
lamps and fixtures. On display were a wide range of interior
downlights, accent luminaires, and cove lighting strips offering
improved lumen efficiency, more stable colour, and warm colour
temperatures.
DOE has selected 13 solid-state lighting (SSL) research and
development projects to receive up to $20.6 million in funding
to assist in developing general lighting applications. Among
the firms selected are Cree, General Electric, Osram Sylvania
Development, and Philips Lumiled Lighting, all of which showed
breakthrough products at the show.
This year, LFI celebrated its 20th anniversary in New York
with a record-breaking attendance of more than 23,000 industry
professionals and conference participants, and featured 475
national and international manufacturers, who showcased their
latest products, technological advances and lighting solutions.
Philips Lighting unveiled its new SSL solution - a 600 lumen
output A-shaped LED bulb that can ultimately be used to replace
40W incandescent bulbs in general lighting applications in
the US market, and the 60W in the European market. Powered
by high-performing LUXEON Rebel LEDs from Philips Lumileds,
the 8W 120V bulb delivers 75 lumens per watt, which is 5 times
the efficacy of an equivalent incandescent bulb. The bulb
is fully dimmable down to 10% and is ideal for use in table
lamps, overhead fixtures, and other indoor general lighting
applications.
LFI is considered the worlds largest annual architectural
and commercial lighting trade show and conference. Watch this

BIEL
Set to Propel Growth
The 11th edition of the biennial trade exhibition dedicated
to electric, electronic and lighting industry - BIEL Light+Building
- will be held from 3-7 November at La Rural Trade Center
at Buenos Aires, the Argentinean capital. Pitched as South
Americas largest trade event, the show will play host
to around 300 companies, of which 80 will be overseas firms

expect the event to attract more than 40,000 visitors from
the sector, where manufacturers, retailers and industry professionals
will find the right opportunities to interact, build contacts
and consolidate their businesses. About 70% exhibition space
has already been booked. Visitors can look forward to the
announcement of the ELI Award for the most efficient lighting
solution, and the 3rd edition of the Technical and Scientific
Congress running alongside.
This year, the event will focus on the core sectors: electrical
energy: generation, transmission and distribution; lighting:
equipment and components; automation: automation in houses,
buildings and industry installations; installations: systems
and components for electrical and communication installations

HKong
Lighting Fair Preferred Destination for Lighting
The Hong Kong International Lighting Fair has emerged as the
most preferred sourcing destination for lighting professionals;
it provides a platform for exhibitors and visitors to expand
their buying agenda, exchange information and position their
brands more strongly, and it is also where local designers
showcase their creativity, much to the admiration of foreign
visitors. Over the years, its status has risen to the second
most important lighting show in the world, mainly due to its
location, and the fact that most key global buyers travel
to Asia for sourcing.
In 2008, more than 1,570 exhibitors from 33 countries and
regions participated in the show, which drew over 28,000 international
buyers. Its organiser HKTDC itself had brought in 67 buying
missions, representing more than 2,600 companies and over
4,000 industry buyers.
In view of the shows growing importance as a global
sourcing hub, and to accord more opportunities to buyers to
assess market trends and place orders in time for the next
season, this year, the organisers have re-positioned the show
to have two editions: Spring and Autumn.
The Spring edition, which ran from 13-16 April, saw buyers
from both mature and emerging markets looking for innovative
products in terms of design and performance. With the worlds
focus on energy-efficient lighting, a large number of exhibits
were lamps and lighting solutions for environmental protection,
greater energy efficiency and longer lifetime, such as solar
lights and LED lamps. Adding to the huge visitorship were
the Hong Kong Electronics Fair and the ICT Expo that were
running alongside.
HKTDC had launched a HK$120 million assistance package to
help exhibitors during the financial turmoil that includes
an incentive programme to bring more new trade buyers to the
show, and subsidies to participants to assist them in strengthening
their marketing efforts.
The Autumn edition is scheduled to be held from 2730
October at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibit Centre in
Wanchai. Major lighting exhibit categories will include commercial,
outdoor, green, household, LEDs and more. There will be a
lighting design competition and winners will be awarded a
free trip to Germanys lighting show. For more information
